چکیده

Abstract This study analyzes projected heat extremes over the Middle-East–North Africa (MENA) region until end of twenty-first century with a number temperature indices based on absolute values and thresholds to describe hot conditions. We use model daily near-surface air (2-m) ( $$T_\mathrm{{max}}$$ T max $$T_\mathrm{{min}}$$ min ) derive for period 1980–2100. The data were taken from 18 CMIP5 models combining historical (1980–2005) scenario runs (2006–2100 under RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5 pathways). Results show domain-wide warming all emission scenarios. Our findings business-as-usual pathway indicate excessive more than 8 $$^\circ $$ ∘ C in northern part domain (south Europe) annual warmest day (TXx) night (TNx). In hottest parts record high temperatures reached 50 recent past, which could increase at least 56 by century, while are expected occur large MENA region. A significant is days (TX $$>40^\circ > 40 C) nights (TN $$>30 ^\circ 30 For 2071–2100 will become normal during summer some locations exceed 180 100 days, respectively. Calculations corresponding index suggest that several areas across may reach levels critical human survival.
